Getting Started

When you come to Starboard Dental, we’ll do an examination to understand what you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll make our recommendations to ensure the best possible care plan for you.

Then, we’ll take X-rays, photographs and impressions of your teeth. All the information we gather is used to create a 3-D image of your teeth. From there, we’ll be able to present you with a plan for moving forward and outline exactly how long you’ll need to wear your aligners.

What to Expect

Once you receive your customized trays, you will need to wear them constantly, except for eating and oral health care. Your plan of care will tell you how long to wear each set of trays, and when to come into the office for a follow-up.

The length of time to achieve your desired results can vary depending on the severity of the correction needed. Typically, it takes anywhere from 6 to 18 months to complete the correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will I wear my aligners?

You will need to wear the aligners all day, only removing them to eat, or brush and floss your teeth. Ideally, you’ll keep them in your mouth for 22 hours each day, including sleeping in them. Don’t worry—most patients find them comfortable.

How often will I get new trays?

Your comfortable aligners will be changed approximately every two weeks, gradually making the changes you desire in each stage. The number of stages will depend on the changes necessary.

Will I need to visit regularly?

During this process, we’ll have you stop in periodically to ensure everything is progressing well, but it’s much less frequent than someone with traditional metal braces. Most patients enjoy the fact that they don’t need to come in weekly or monthly for check-ins.
